Ernest Kemp Cruises runs the relaxed two-hour version: along the Taupō lakefront, past tree-lined bays, out to the Ngātoroirangi carving and back to Taupō Boat Harbour, a short walk from the town centre. The skipper does the commentary live rather than through a recording, covering the lake's history and what the carving means.
It is the most straightforwardly family-friendly boat here. There is comfortable indoor and outdoor seating, complimentary tea, coffee and cookies, a licensed bar if you want something else, and children are invited up to visit the skipper and collect a Wheel Certificate. If conditions allow there is a chance to swim.
The carving is the point of the trip: roughly 14 metres of worked rock above deep water, completed in 1980, and accessible only by boat. The skipper explains how it came to be there and holds the boat close enough to see the detail before turning back for the lakefront.
