This is the short, dependable version: ninety minutes from Taupō Boat Harbour to the Ngātoroirangi carving and back, on a catamaran with live commentary the whole way. It is the option most visitors take, and the reason is timing — it fits into an afternoon without rearranging the day around it.
The commentary is the substance here. You get the lake's geology, the story of the carving, and why a 1970s work sits on a cliff that has no path to it. The carving rises about 14 metres above deep water and was finished in 1980; on the way out the crew fills in the rest.
Tea, coffee and a freshly baked blueberry muffin come with the 8:30am, 10:30am, 1:00pm and 3:00pm departures. The 1:00pm sailing also carries a short trout-fishing demonstration, conditions permitting. The 10:30am and 1:00pm run all year; the rest are seasonal.

- Only the 10:30am and 1:00pm departures run year-round. The 8:30am, 3:00pm, 5:00pm and 7:00pm sailings operate in peak season and selected periods only.
- Check in at least 15 minutes before departure; vessels leave on time.
- The main vessel, Cruise Cat, takes wheelchairs and prams, but there is no accessible toilet on board. Sailings sometimes switch to the smaller Supercat, which is not wheelchair accessible.
- Wheelchair access also depends on lake levels and the size of the chair — call the operator before you travel to confirm.

Is 90 minutes long enough to see the carvings properly?
Yes. The run out to Mine Bay and back is the bulk of the time, and the boat holds station at the carving long enough to look at it and photograph it. What you trade away against the longer sailing trips is the swim stop and the time on open water, not the carving itself.
Which departures run in winter?
The 10:30am and 1:00pm sailings operate year-round. The early, late and evening departures are seasonal, so outside summer you are choosing between two times rather than six.
Is the boat wheelchair accessible?
Cruise Cat takes wheelchairs and prams, but there is no accessible toilet on board, and cruises sometimes run on the smaller Supercat, which is not accessible. Access also depends on lake levels and chair size — phone the operator before travelling rather than turning up and hoping.
What is the fishing demonstration?
