Fearless is a classic sailing yacht, and this is the trip that treats the journey as half the point. You leave Taupō Marina under sail, cross open water toward Mine Bay, and arrive at the Ngātoroirangi carving the way it was meant to be seen — quietly, from the water, with no engine noise flattening the moment.
The carving itself rises roughly 14 metres out of the lake. Matahi Brightwell and a team of four cut it into the cliff over four summers, finishing in 1980, and there is no track in: the only way to stand in front of it is to float there. Your crew explains who Ngātoroirangi was and why this face is on this rock while the yacht holds position below it.
On the way back the boat stops for a swim, and this operator gives the longest swim break on the lake. If the wind gets up, Fearless heels and you feel it. If it drops, you sit in the sun with a hot drink and blankets. Either way it is two and a half hours on Australasia's largest freshwater lake, and one complimentary drink is included.

Real sailing. Fearless is a classic sailing yacht and the trip is wind-powered, which is why the route and timing move with conditions. You are welcome to help the crew work the boat or to sit back and leave them to it.
Can I swim at the carvings?
There is a swim stop on the trip, and this operator runs the longest one on the lake. Lake Taupō is cold year-round — bring a towel and expect the water to be brisk even in February.
What happens if the wind does not cooperate?
The trip still runs; the crew adjusts. Sailings are cancelled only for genuinely unsuitable lake or weather conditions, or if minimum numbers are not met, in which case you are offered a reschedule or a full refund.
