Step 1: Choose the experience

Pick a scenic cruise if you want a shorter, structured trip with commentary and shelter. The 90-minute scenic cruise is the quickest way to the carvings, and the Ernest Kemp lakefront cruise takes two hours from Berth 2 at the same harbour. Choose a yacht or catamaran if you want more time on the lake and a relaxed sailing day: Fearless, the Tiua catamaran and the Sail Barbary electric yacht each sail for 2.5 hours. Our scenic cruise versus sailing guide compares the two, and our guide to choosing a trip matches each one to who it suits.

For a group or a special occasion, ask the operators for a private charter quote before you buy individual tickets.

Step 2: Check the exact boat

Operators may run several products or vessels. Confirm:

  • vessel name
  • passenger capacity
  • indoor and outdoor seating
  • toilet access
  • shade or shelter
  • boarding arrangements
  • child and mobility policies

Don’t assume every departure from the same company uses the same boat. The scenic cruise’s main vessel, Cruise Cat, takes wheelchairs and prams, but some sailings switch to the smaller Supercat, which doesn’t, and Cruise Cat has no accessible toilet; Sail Barbary’s yacht has a toilet on board. Fearless and Tiua leave from the same marina with the same operator, but one is a monohull that heels under sail and the other a flat, stable catamaran with an indoor saloon.

Step 3: Compare duration and time

Allow 90 minutes to 2.5 hours for a cruise, or four hours for the kayaking tour, plus 15 minutes for check-in. Our cruise duration guide shows how much of your day to block out.

A morning departure suits a flexible sightseeing day, and the lake is often calmer before the wind builds. An afternoon can be warmer. Sunset sailings are about atmosphere and are seasonal: the scenic cruise’s 5:00pm and 7:00pm departures run only in peak season and selected periods, and Fearless’s sunset time moves with the season. Our morning versus afternoon guide covers the trade-off.

Step 4: Review the total price

Check which fares apply to your group, whether a child or family price is offered, and what is included. Prices on this site start at $32 for the Ernest Kemp cruise, $34 for Fearless and Sail Barbary, $38 for the scenic cruise and $40 for Tiua; the kayak tour is $84 and adds a NZ$8.83 per-person entrance fee paid to the Māori community on the day. Look for extras such as drinks from the bar. A lower headline price can mean a shorter trip.

Our cruise prices guide breaks down tickets, inclusions and extra costs.

Step 5: Read the weather and cancellation policy

Lake conditions can force a delay, a route change or a cancellation. Know whether the operator offers a refund, credit or rebooking, and what happens if you cancel yourself.

On every trip here you can cancel up to 24 hours before for a full refund. If the operator calls a trip off, the sailing trips offer a reschedule or a full refund, and Sail Barbary and the kayak tour refund in full. The sailing trips also need minimum numbers, so an under-booked departure can be cancelled, and Tiua doesn’t refund no-shows at check-in.

Step 6: Enter the right contact details

Use an email address and a phone number you can reach while travelling. Operators may send weather updates or check-in instructions close to departure.

Step 7: Save the confirmation

Your confirmation should give the date, departure time, check-in time, meeting point, operator, number of passengers and booking reference. Take a screenshot in case mobile reception is patchy. Every boat leaves from Taupō Boat Harbour on Redoubt Street (also listed as Taupō Marina), but from different berths: Berth 4 for the scenic cruise, Berth 2 for Ernest Kemp, Berths 9 and 10 for Sail Barbary, and Berths 16 and 17 for Fearless and Tiua. Our berth guide for Taupō Boat Harbour has the full list and what to do if your confirmation says otherwise. The kayak tour starts at the Canoe & Kayak shop instead.

When to book

Book early for summer weekends, school holidays, public holidays and sunset departures. December to March is the busiest stretch, and the popular departures fill. In winter there are fewer departures, so check the schedule instead of assuming the boats run daily: the scenic cruise keeps only its 10:30am and 1:00pm sailings year-round. Our winter cruise guide has more.

Direct booking or third-party platform?

Booking direct can make it easier to talk to the operator. A reputable third-party platform can make it easier to compare trips and may offer useful cancellation terms; the links on this site go to GetYourGuide, where every trip listed here carries free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. Compare the final price and the policy, not the first number you see.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book on the day?

Sometimes, if seats are left. Booking ahead is safer when your dates are fixed, especially from December to March.

Do I need to print the ticket?

Usually a digital confirmation is enough, but follow the instructions in your booking.

What if the weather looks poor?

Don’t cancel on your own unless you accept the policy consequences. Wait for the operator’s assessment or contact them; if they call the trip off, you are offered a reschedule or a refund.

Can I change passenger names?

Policies vary. Contact the booking provider as soon as possible.

Should I book the cheapest cruise?

Only if its duration, boat and inclusions match what you want. The cheapest trip on this site, the Ernest Kemp cruise, is also a new listing with only a handful of verified reviews so far.
